(Oct 27): “Wasatiyyah” (moderation) in society is necessary to prevent a society from succumbing to the twin enemies of all major religions – liberalism and extremism, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak said today.

Najib said “wasatiyyah” was the best principle for a society to practise, as it called for a balanced approach in life.

"Without 'wasatiyyah', society will easily fall into extremism, which results in radicalism such as Isis, or extremism that will threaten religion, such as liberalism and extremists," he said in his officiating speech at the international "Religion and Harmony of Life" seminar in Kuala Lumpur.

Najib said religion could help bring everyone together if everyone embodied "wasatiyyah" in their daily lives.

"It brings the message of doing good to others, courage and justice, and it rejects all forms of evil. I am confident that religion can provide the bridge that the world badly needed today."

He also stressed on the importance of peace and maintaining harmony and unity between different faiths.

"Peace in life does not simply mean security.

"It is a shared responsibility to know one another and to find the point that binds all humans together, regardless of faith."

Najib also urged the public to set aside their differences, so as to create a tolerant and harmonious society. – The Malaysian Insider
