(April 8): The mother of murder convict Sirul Azhar met Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad in Putrajaya today.

Piah Samat’s meeting took place at Dr Mahathir’s Yayasan Perdana office and she was accompanied by PAS information chief Datuk Mahfuz Omar.

However, Mahfuz did not want to be drawn out on what transpired at the meeting.

“We will be holding a press conference at the Parliament tomorrow,” he told The Malaysian Insider tonight.

The meeting comes after Dr Mahathir’s post against Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak for his refusal to answer questions, including those surrounding the murder of Altantuya Shariibuu

Piah Samat had, in earlier interviews, said her son had acted on orders from higher up and was paying the price for his actions now.

Sirul and Chief Inspector Azilah Hadri were found guilty of the murder, but a five-man Federal Court bench led by Chief Justice Tun Arifin Zakaria sentenced the men to be hanged, overturning a 2013 Court of Appeal ruling over the killing of Altantuya.

Evidence in court revealed that Altantuya was murdered before her body was blown up by C4 explosives on October 18, 2006, in the outskirts of Shah Alam, near the capital city Kuala Lumpur

Despite the conviction, the motive for the murder was never revealed.

Dr Mahathir has been harping on this and had last week, in his post, said it would be cruel to hang Sirul if he had been following orders to kill the Mongolian.

“The public is wondering who gave Sirul the order,” he wrote in a blog posting.

“He was Datuk Seri Najib’s bodyguard and his allegation must be investigated to determine who gave the order. Najib has only said that Sirul was talking rubbish. There’s been no investigation.

“We’re talking about somebody’s life. It would be cruel indeed to kill someone who was following orders,” he wrote in his blog. – The Malaysian Insider
