KUALA LUMPUR (Oct 26): Singapore ranks among cities like Vancouver, Stockholm, and Los Angeles as home to some of the top colleges and universities around the globe, according to the US News Best Global Universities rankings.

US News & World Report is an American media company that publishes news, consumer advice, rankings, and analysis.

The 2022 edition of Best Global Universities rankings released on Tuesday (Oct 25), evaluates schools based on their academic research and reputation.

Broken down by region, 26 of the top 50 universities are in North America — like last year, fewer than the year before — 14 are in Europe and five each are in Asia and Australia/New Zealand.

The three newest additions to the top 50 include Utrecht University in the Netherlands, Peking University in China and the University of New South Wales in Australia.

The National University of Singapore ranked as No 2 within Asia and No 29 in the world.

One of the two ranked institutions in China, Tsinghua University, placed high at both a regional level, No 1, and around the globe, No 26.

Similar to the prior year, the vast majority of the top-ranked schools within North America are located in the US.

Four are ranked in the top five, including Harvard University in Massachusetts, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Stanford University in California and the University of California — Berkeley.

Other institutions are spread across the country in Connecticut, Illinois, Maryland, Missouri, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Texas and Washington.

Two Canadian universities were ranked in the top 50: the University of Toronto at a tie for No 16 and the University of British Columbia at No 35.

Universities in Europe make up nearly one-third of the list, with most situated in the UK.

Two appeared in the top 10: the University of Oxford and the University of Cambridge.

Seven additional countries in Europe had schools in the top 50, including Belgium, Denmark, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Sweden and Switzerland.

Meanwhile, Universiti Malaysia ranked 226 globally, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia came in at 379, and Universiti Sains Malaysia ranked 504 among best global universities.
