KUALA LUMPUR (March 29): Shortage of skilled local professionals in the areas of planning, claims and contract administration is evident in the construction sector, despite the boom resulting from government and private projects.

ReevesOw Consulting Sdn Bhd executive director Kevin Reeves said in a statement that there are more jobs than there are local people who can do them.

“Despite the depressed oil prices and uncertain economic climate, there are still major infrastructure projects coming on stream, such as the Mass Rapid Transit 2 (MRT2), Light Rail Transit 3 (LRT3), Pan Borneo Highway, and the Refinery and Petrochemicals Integrated Development (Rapid) in Pengerang, Johor.

“There are also billion ringgit mixed-development projects like the Tun Razak Exchange,” said Reeves.

“These require qualified and experienced people who can advise and help construction and engineering companies recover their entitlements to additional time and payment, in order to avoid or at least minimise disputes and loss of earnings,” he added.

ReevesOw, specialising in construction contracts consultancy, is looking to train Malaysian claims consultants and planners, to help fill the gap in the industry.

“We need the right people. We need people who can think logically, are willing to trawl through information to understand, analyse and identify issues and to communicate accurately.

“We know this is very challenging, so we are willing to train suitable local candidates who are genuinely interested to learn and build a career in construction contracts consultancy,” Reeves said.

He pointed out that major construction and engineering projects can be contentious, as they are complex and have ambitious timeframes.

Companies can earn millions of ringgit and can also lose millions of ringgit, if they do not meet contractual obligations and deadlines, he added.

“Contract and commercial advice is needed to help companies manage projects efficiently and protect their commercial interests,” he said.

ReevesOw, which provides contract and commercial support for construction and engineering projects, has worked on the Klang Valley MRT, klia2, SMART Tunnel, Penang Bridge, Kuala Lumpur-Putrajaya Highway and Taiwan High Speed Rail projects.

It also handled hydroelectric and coal fired plants, transmission lines, offshore platforms and pipelines, and highrise commercial and residential building projects.
