KUALA LUMPUR (May 28): Health director-general Datuk Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said the ministry will consider reopening schools and more social sectors if the number of new Covid-19 daily cases, which dropped to 10 today — its lowest since the movement control order was instituted on March 18 — remain low.

The concern now is whether the recent Hari Raya Aidilfitri festival has had any impact on the country's infection rate, which remains to be seen, he said during his daily Covid-19 press briefing today.

“Today, we have seen how the collaboration between the ministry and the public can bring down the number of infections, so the strategy of applying CMCO [Conditional Movement Control Order] is fruitful.

“But the question is, when are we going to improve further or change the strategy? Our concern now is the festive season. The following two weeks, we will monitor the cases closely and see if we can sustain our achievement. If we can continue to keep the daily cases to low double-digit or reduce it further to single digit, then we will make a decision on June 9.

“This means that if we can sustain [the low daily figures] until June 9, even after taking into account the festive season, then we may open up more social sectors, as well as the education sector,” said Dr Noor Hisham.

He hopes the public will continue to work with the Ministry of Health by complying with the standard operating procedure (SOP) that has been established.

“The social responsibility, social discipline and social compliance are very important to us to break the chain of Covid-19 transmission in this country,” he said.

“If Malaysians comply with our SOP, rest assured that we will [be able to reduce] our daily cases to single digit,” he added.
