(Sept 4): Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad has praised sacked Umno Langkawi member Anina Saadudin for standing up to the party after she filed a suit against Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak over the RM2.6 billion donation in his personal bank accounts.

In a letter to Anina, the former prime minister offered words of encouragement and urged her to continue speaking the truth despite a backlash from certain groups of people.

"I hope you continue to speak the truth although some quarters may not like it.

"Don't give up, our county needs people like you," Dr Mahathir said in a letter sighted by The Malaysian Insider.

The country's longest serving prime minister also told Anina he was proud of her brave actions as not many would dare take the Umno president to court.

"I am proud of what you have done.

"Not many will dare to speak the truth when it involves high ranking leaders, for fear they will be labelled as traitors," he added in his letter.

Anina has filed a suit against Najib, who is the party president, asking him prime minister to account for the chronology of events involving RM2.6 billion channelled into his bank accounts.

Following her court action, Anina was sacked from the party for breaching the Umno constitution which bars its members from taking the party to court.

She has threatened to sue party secretary-general Datuk Seri Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor if he failed to retract the termination letter against her.

She said Tengku Adnan would be in contempt of court as she had applied to the court for an injunction against being sacked, as long as the court has not heard her case against the prime minister.

Anina created a stir when she criticised Najib harshly at the Langkawi Wanita Umno division meeting last month, where her outburst was caught on video and went viral.

In it, she said Najib had lied by claiming all three million Umno members supported him.

Anina also said she had no choice but to use harsh words, adding that a softer approach would have fallen on deaf ears, pointing to Umno deputy president Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin who was sacked from the Cabinet despite his "polite" criticism of the prime minister. – The Malaysian Insider
