KUALA LUMPUR (June 6): Twenty people lost their lives on the roads on the first day of Aidilfitri yesterday.

Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) corporate communications head Datuk Asmawati Ahmad said since the Op Selamat 15 road safety operation in conjunction with the Aidilfitri festive season was launched on May 29, 13,316 accidents involving 18,854 vehicles were reported in eight days (until yesterday).

Fatalities numbered 140.

“Yesterday, four fatalities were reported in Kedah, Perak and Johor, three in Selangor, two in Pahang and one each in Negeri Sembilan, Kelantan and Sabah,” she said in a statement here.

According to the statement, from May 29 till yesterday, 2,385 road safety operations were conducted with 182,755 summonses issued over various offences.

Meanwhile, as for break-ins (houses and buildings) , she said 334 cases were reported throughout the country in the same eight days.

Ops Selamat, which ends on June 12, focuses on six major offences namely driving on the emergency lane, overtaking on double lines, using hand phones not "hands-free” mode, queue jumping, speeding and beating traffic lights.
