KUALA LUMPUR (Sept 4): The ringgit had continued to weaken against the US dollar to nearly a three-year low of 4.2203 just yesterday due to the ongoing Sino-US trade war as well as the weaker renminbi.

At the time of writing, the ringgit has strengthened slightly to 4.2110 against the greenback. Today, it was traded between 4.209 and 4.2175. Over the past 12 months, the local currency was traded above the 4.0 level between 4.0545 and 4.2280.

In comparison with other major and regional currencies' performance, against the US dollar, it appears that the ringgit has been sandwiched in the middle of the pack, not the worst performing currency.

Over the past year, against the greenback, the ringgit has weakened 1.7%, while the Singapore dollar, Taiwanese dollar, and Chinese renminbi weakened as much as 0.98%, 1.96% and 4.49% respectively, according to Bloomberg data. The South Korean won, the worst performer, fell 7.87%.

Elsewhere, the euro and Australian dollar fell 5.24% and 5.64% respectively.

On the other hand, the Thai baht, Indonesian rupiah and Japanese yen still performed stronger and had appreciated against the US dollar at 7.23%, 5.29% and 5.03% respectively.

Year to date, the performances among the selected currencies did not differ much. The ringgit, which depreciated 1.24% against the greenback, however, performed better than the Indian rupee (-1.31%) and Singapore dollar (-1.31%).
