PUTRAJAYA (Jan 10): The ability to work with the minister is among the factors taken into account when choosing the ministry's secretary-general, said Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad.

"The government has decided that a secretary-general has the right to be transferred from one ministry to another as this is related to the performance and future promotion," Dr Mahathir told reporters after chairing a meeting of the special cabinet committee on anti-corruption.

"Sometimes, the reshuffling of the ministry's secretary-general is also due to the suitability and ability to work with a particular minister," he added.

Normally, the government will not ask who the minister prefers as the secretary-general, said Dr Mahathir.

"Even though we do not ask the specific minister, we will still investigate the potential secretary-general based on his previous working relationship and the quality that he possessed," he added.

On Jan 4, Chief Secretary to the Government Datuk Dr Ismail Bakar announced a reshuffle involving the secretaries-general of 12 ministries.

Ismail had said the secretary-general post had become vacant in some ministries as the incumbents are scheduled to retire or their contracts have expired.
