KUALA LUMPUR (May 31): Allianz Malaysia Bhd has appointed Tan Sri Rafiah Salim (pictured) as chairman of the company, as well as Allianz General Insurance Co (Malaysia) Bhd, effective May 23.

She replaces Tan Sri Razali Bin Ismail who retired as chairman and director of Allianz Malaysia, Allianz General and Allianz Life Insurance Malaysia Bhd.

In a statement today, Allianz Malaysia said Rafiah, who was appointed as independent director since 2012, is the first woman appointed as chairman of the company.

Meanwhile, Foo San Kan takes over the chairman role at Allianz Life.

"Rafiah's international experience includes holding the position as assistant secretary-general of human resource management of United Nations (UN), New York, from 1997 to 2002, and she was the first Malaysian appointed to such a high ranking post in the UN.

"From 2003 to 2006, she was the executive director of the International Centre for Leadership in Finance, now known as The ICLIF Leadership And Governance Centre. In 2006, she was appointed as the vice-chancellor and president of University of Malaya. She was also the executive director of NAM Institute for the Empowerment of Women Malaysia from 2009 to 2013," said Allianz Malaysia.

Allianz Malaysia shares closed 12 sen or 0.93% higher at RM13.02 today, bringing a market capitalisation of RM2.36 billion.
