KUALA LUMPUR (March 17): The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission has allocated RM3.2 billion under the Universal Services Provision (USP) Fund this year to improve the quality of broadband services, particularly in rural areas.
The fund will be utilised to upgrade existing transmission stations, as well as to provide fibre optics infrastructure to related premises, said Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin.
The initiative is part of the RM20 billion PEMERKASA stimulus package which Muhyiddin announced in a televised address today. The package includes RM11 billion in fiscal injection by the government.
The prime minister said Malaysia could expect 5G services to begin operating in stages from the end of this year.
"The MyDIGITAL framework and Malaysia Digital Economy Blueprint have underlined commercial 5G services as an essential need, as high-speed internet is key to spur innovation and new employment opportunities in the nation's digital economy," he said.
