KUALA LUMPUR (April 10): The Malaysian government, which announced today that it will extend its partial lockdown till April 28, has agreed that selected economic sectors will be allowed to resume operations in stages, under strict movement control order and healthcare guidelines.
These sectors will be determined by a special cabinet committee that will be chaired by the senior minister of international trade and industry, and the senior defence minister, said Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin when announcing this via a live telecast today.
"I would like to stress that the limited opening of these sectors do not mean we are relaxing the movement control order (MCO). This order is still in force and all directives issued by the authority must be complied with.
"If any business, factory or company violates the regulations, the government will withdraw the permission given," said Muhyiddin.
"The list of sectors will be announced by the government soon," he added.
Malaysia first imposed its MCO from March 18 to March 31, but later extended it by two weeks to April 14. Today, it further extended the MCO to April 28.
The country has recorded a total of 4,346 confirmed Covid-19 cases to date, of which 1,830 have recovered, and 70 died.
