KUALA LUMPUR (Dec 6): Puteri Umno promises to give full support to any suggestions, as long as it is beneficial to women, says its chief Mas Ermieyati Samsudin today.

She said each year, at least 30,000 to 40,000 members of the Wanita wing are supplied by Puteri thus it made sense to support things that will benefit, at the end of it, both party wings.

"Anything that benefits the women, I will support,

"If PKR have a vice president among the women, why not Umno?... Someone who can defend the women's plight and represent both Wanita and Puteri wings," she said during her visit at the Puteri Umno's blood donation drive at Putra World Trade Centre today.

Mas Ermieyati was responding to Wanita chief Datuk Seri Shahrizat Abdul Jalil's suggestion to have at least a woman in the vice president line-up and also the call to recognise the wing as Umno's backbone.

"We support Wanita Umno all the way," said Mas Ermieyati.

She also expressed her happiness that Shahrizat would consider the request of any women age 18 years and above who wants to join Wanita instead of Puteri although it would be based on a case-by-case basis.

Moving on to topics discussed during the assembly, Mas pointed out that the wing was keen to prepare for the 14th General Election.

"I see that GE14 is a critical time for all Umno members, so we must start all our work now." she said.

As part of an effort to bring voters back to Barisan Nasional (BN), Mas Ermieyati said instead of just boasting 'Hidup Melayu' (long live Malays) slogan, the party should work towards helping the community instead.

"I don't believe in shouting 'Hidup Melayu' (long live Malays) but don't work for it.

"So, the general assembly is the best place to boost this working spirit and to be in agreement. Therefore, we must increase our commitment to move the machineries," she said.

Mas Ermieyati said even now, efforts has already started and that she had told her Puteri delegates that the wing must work towards the next general election to garner in more support for BN.

"Yes, we can say that the general election is four years away but within that period anything can happen.

"We don't want to take things lightly. The Puteri's are serious in working towards the next general election," she said.

One of the effort that will be taken, she said is to ensure that the grassroots receive information to avoid misunderstanding and spreading of untruthful facts that is often synonymous with social media.

"That is why I said knowledge must be stressed. Everything we must have a post mortem and equip our members with knowldge.

"It must be done. If we don't do it, explain things to the grassroots, then they will misunderstand the governments policies," she said.
