(May 13): Permodalan Nasional Bhd (PNB) is denying the purchase of RM579.2 million of sukuk bonds from debt-heavy state investment vehicle 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB).

National news agency Bernama quoted the country’s largest management company as saying in a statement today that it was not involved in such a purchase.

"PNB also did not receive any offer from 1MDB," it said in the statement responding to The Malaysian Insider’s report.

The Malaysian Insider yesterday quoted PKR secretary-general Rafizi Ramli as saying that PNB bought RM579.2 million of sukuk bonds by 1MDB.

He added that this showed a trend of government-linked companies being used to raise funds for the debt-ridden state investment firm.

Since Tabung Haji admitted yesterday that it bought RM920.8 million worth of sukuk from 1MDB, this could only mean PNB had bought the remaining RM579.2 million, said Rafizi. – The Malaysian Insider
