KUALA LUMPUR (Aug 25): In a bid to calm the heated political situation in Malaysia, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob today met with several leaders of the opposition to find common ground between the parties in order to address the current health and economic crisis.

In a statement, the prime minister said the meeting that lasted over an hour focused on addressing the Covid-19 pandemic, as well as the challenging economic situation faced by the people due to job and income losses.

He said a consensus was reached among the parties on strengthening the Malaysian Parliament's function as a responsible and constructive institution, on having checks and balances the executive administration for greater transparency, and to fulfil the needs of the people.

"I, together with the opposition leaders, also agree on and understand the importance of the independence of the judiciary, institutional reform and good governance to ensure a more conducive environment for the people and the country in the context of 'Keluarga Malaysia'," he said.
