KUALA LUMPUR (Oct 17): Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak said he informed Qatar Emir Sheikh Tamim Hamad Al Thani of Malaysia's hope to see its companies being given opportunities to participate in Qatar's 2022 FIFA World Cup infrastructure development.

Najib wrote this yesterday in www.najibrazak.com after his meeting with Sheikh Tamim, who was on a state visit to Malaysia on Sunday and yesterday.

Najib said: "I was informed that Qatar's preparation as the host of the 2022 FIFA World Cup is running smoothly and I have expressed my hope for Malaysian companies to be given the opportunity to be involved in infrastructure development for the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar."

Najib said Sheikh Tamim's visit enabled Malaysia and Qatar to further strengthen both countries' economic ties.

"Bilateral trade between Malaysia and Qatar had increased 36.5% from January to August 2017 to US$384.4 million (about RM1.62 billion) versus US$300.5 million in the same period last year," Najib said.
