KUALA LUMPUR (May 12): Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak said he and Alibaba Group Holding Ltd's founder and executive chairman Jack Ma discussed plans for Malaysia's proposed Digital Free Trade Zone (DFTZ) to promote electronic commerce (e-commerce) growth in the country.

Najib tweeted about his meeting with Ma during Najib's visit to Alibaba's headquarters in Hangzhou, China today. The visit to Alibaba's headquarters formed part of Najib's China itinerary from May 12 to 16, during which, he will attend the Belt and Road Forum in Beijing.

"Walked to Jack's office for biz discussion on how we can take a step fwd (forward) towards realizing DFTZ. I believe e-commerce is the future for us," Najib said.

Malaysia plans to establish the DFTZ within Bandar Malaysia, a planned real estate project on a 194ha (486 acre/21.17 million sq ft) tract within the old airport site in Sungai Besi here.

The DFTZ is expected to increase overall goods exports by US$25 billion (about RM109 billion) and create 60,000 jobs by 2025.
