KUALA LUMPUR (Dec 9): Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has confirmed the impending change of the Treasury secretary general in the Ministry of Finance, calling it a “normal” course of action.

“That is a normal change, it also involved the promotion and transfer across departments,” Anwar said after a press conference after announcing the deputy ministers’ line-up.

The change will be decided by the chief secretary to the Government (Tan Sri Mohd Zuki Ali), Anwar added.

There was speculation on a replacement for the post after Anwar said earlier this week that he will discuss the details of the appointment of advisors for the Ministry of Finance with a "new" Treasury secretary general.

This was amid the absence of the incumbent Treasury secretary general Datuk Seri Asri Hamidin @ Hamidon during Anwar’s first clocking in at the Ministry of Finance, while the three deputy treasury secretaries general were present.

Asri was appointed to the post in April 2020 under the government led by Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin, taking over from Tan Sri Ahmad Badri Mohd Zahir after the latter's contract ended. It was reported that Asri is currently on leave, and that a deputy is acting in his stead.

Within the Ministry of Finance, the new administration under Anwar has said it will review several federal spending projects awarded by the previous government.

These include RM7 billion worth of flood mitigation projects, the RM11 billion 5G roll-out involving government-owned Digital Nasional Bhd, as well as RM92.5 billion linked to Covid-19 stimulus funds during the pandemic.
