KUALA LUMPUR (Feb 4): Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin said he will advise Yang di-Pertuan Agong Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah to dissolve Parliament as soon as the Covid-19 pandemic is brought under control and a general election (GE) can be held.

During his national address, Muhyiddin urged his peers from the government and opposition to put aside their political differences and work together in the fight against Covid-19.

He also urged all parties to respect the King’s approval of the proclamation of emergency as His Highness was satisfied with the reason being that the rate of infection of Covid-19 in the country was at a critical level.

The prime minister reiterated that the Emergency Ordinance allows immediate action to be taken by the government. This allows for better efficiency in managing the pandemic, he added.

“The proclamation of emergency does not have any other motive besides curbing the spread of Covid-19 more effectively and protecting the lives of the rakyat,” said Muhyiddin.

He noted that certain parties are attempting to challenge the proclamation of emergency in the court, although the premier believes that the King, as the leader of the nation, understands and respects the legal system and process in Malaysia.

“As the leader of the government, I too respect the legal system and process of our country, which is based on constitutional monarchy and parliamentary democracy.

“I reiterate my commitment that I will advise Duli Yang Maha Mulia Seri Paduka Baginda Yang di-Pertuan Agong to dissolve Parliament as soon as the spread of Covid-19 subsides and a general election can be safely held,” he said.
