KUALA LUMPUR: PKR has dismissed all news and speculation that its de facto head Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has agreed or compromised on any other person to be the new Selangor Menteri Besar besides Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail.

In a statement yesterday, party secretary-general Datuk Saifuddin Nasution Ismail said the decision to have Dr Wan Azizah, who is PKR president and Kajang assembly member, as agreed upon at the political bureau meeting last week, has not changed.

The Selangor palace is expected to announce the name of the new menteri besar today, with the swearing-in scheduled for tomorrow.

Saifuddin’s statement appears to counter reports that PKR deputy president Mohamed Azmin Ali has struck an agreement with Anwar to assume the seat should he be chosen by the Sultan of Selangor.

Both the PKR and DAP submitted only one name — Dr Wan Azizah — to Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah for the post on grounds that she alone has the support of 30 of the 56 Selangor assemblymen.

However, PAS submitted three names, including Azmin, while publicly rejecting Dr Wan Azizah.

Meanwhile, DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng told reporters in Penang that the party’s central executive committee will hold an emergency meeting at its headquarters in Kuala Lumpur tonight.

English daily The Star reported yesterday that Azmin and two PAS assemblymen had an audience with the Sultan earlier last week for the ruler to assess their suitability as the state’s menteri besar.

The two PAS representatives were Iskandar Samad, who is the Cempaka assemblyman, and Dr Ahmad Yunus Hairi, who is the representative for Sijangkang. — The Malaysian Insider
