KUALA LUMPUR (June 28): Although PKR has made its stand on the issue of Pakatan Harapan's prime minister candidate, the party is open to discuss any decision on the matter at the coalition level, on the condition that the candidate choice has to be unanimously agreed upon by the Pakatan presidential council.

PKR secretary-general Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail (pic) said any new proposal should not be based on personal political interests of any leaders of the member parties.

"PKR also maintains that the people's mandate must be restored immediately, and in the form given by the people to Pakatan Harapan in the 14th general election (GE14), including the issue of power transfer from Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad to Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim," he said in PKR's official Facebook post today on behalf of the party's central leadership committee (MPP).

The issue surrounding the Pakatan prime minister candidate came to a head when the coalition seemed to be dithering over the matter of late.

The statement by PKR came on the heels of former prime minister Dr Mahathir's decision yesterday to name Parti Warisan Sabah (Warisan) president Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal as the new prime minister candidate for the Pakatan coalition.

Dr Mahathir claimed that the decision was made together with leaders of Amanah, DAP and Warisan during an informal meeting on Thursday.

However, following the announcement by Dr Mahathir, DAP and Amanah said in a joint statement that the decision had not been finalised as the proposal must first be deliberated by their respective parties’ central committee as well as the Pakatan presidential council.

On the other hand, PKR already finalised its decision to nominate party president Anwar as its prime minister candidate for Pakatan on June 19.

At the time, PKR did not endorse the proposal to nominate Dr Mahathir as the candidate for the post.

Meanwhile, Saifuddin also called for the strengthening of the Pakatan coalition in order to be prepared to face any possibilities, including having GE15 even before 2023.

"The Pakatan presidential council believes that cooperation among the member parties must be strengthened. At the same time, we would like to remind all member parties to be vigilant and not be trapped by any efforts to divide the parties in Pakatan Harapan, similar to what was done to PKR before," he stressed.
