KUALA LUMPUR (Jan 17): Perusahaan Otomobil Kedua Sdn Bhd (Perodua) is targeting to capture 34% of the Malaysian car market this year, with a sales target of 202,000 vehicles.
The projection, however, is lower than what the national car manufacturer achieved in 2016, based on performance figures reviewed during a media briefing today.
Last year, Perodua commanded 35.7% market share — the highest ever achieved in the compact carmaker's history — with more than 207,100 vehicles sold.
The Perodua Bezza energy efficient vehicle (EEV), its first sedan which was launched in July 2016, sold over 36,000 units to-date.
"[Last year was challenging for us and the automotive industry], due to a tough market where consumers were still adjusting to a challenging market condition, the prudent lending guidelines and stiff competition by nearly all auto players," said Perodua president and chief executive Datuk Aminar Rashid during the briefing.
On profitability, Aminar said the company would focus on its after-sales segment for revenue growth.
In 2016, Perodua posted revenue of RM266 million for its after sales division, up 7.3% from RM248 million in 2015.
