KUALA LUMPUR (April 18): The proposed Penang South Reclamation (PSR) project, which entails the reclamation of three islands on the southern part of Penang Island, has received the approval from the National Physical Planning Council (NPPC) chaired by Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad.

Penang Chief Minister (CM) Chow Kon Yeow, in a posting on his social media account today, announced that the proposed PSR project was considered and subsequently approved by the NPPC, as long as it adheres to 18 conditions set.

“The project was proposed by the Penang State Government with the intention to spur State economic development, and to finance the Penang State Transportation Master Plan.

“The Penang State Government will comply with the advice of the NPPC and relevant technical departments when undertaking this project, in accordance with Section 2A(2)(b) of the Town and Country Planning Act 1976,” Chow said.

The PSR is a mega reclamation project to create three islands with a total size of 1,821ha. The project is supposed to fund the RM46 billion Penang Transport Master Plan, which will include a Light Rail Transit (LRT) and the building of Pan Island Link 1 (PIL 1).

It was earlier reported that Chow plans to build an airport on one of the three PSR islands, as part of the long-term plan to support the growth of passengers in the future.
