KUALA LUMPUR (Oct 13): Jailed former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak’s name has been included in the list of potential candidates for the Pekan parliamentary constituency for the upcoming 15th general election (GE15).

Citing Utusan Malaysia, news portal The Vibes reported that the division’s deputy chief Datuk Seri Zamri Ramly, who confirmed the matter, also confirmed that the division did not name any of Najib’s children as potential candidates for the seat.

The seat, he claimed, would be "returned" to Najib should the latter get a royal pardon in his SRC International Sdn Bhd case.

“Even if Najib is not allowed to compete, there are no plans to place Najib’s children to contest the Pekan seat.

“Whoever is picked to contest [by the party leadership] will 'return' the seat to Najib if he gets a pardon,” Zamri was quoted as saying by Utusan Malaysia.

While the division’s deputy chief did not reveal the four other names for the Pekan seat, he did confirm that Najib’s eldest son, Datuk Mohd Nizar Najib, has been nominated for a state seat instead.

Meanwhile, Utusan Malaysia in a separate report quoted lawyer Mohamed Haniff Khatri Abdulla as saying that Najib is disqualified from being a candidate for the GE15, according to Article 48 of the Federal Constitution.

He said the only avenue for Najib to stand as a candidate is if he is granted a pardon before the election nomination day.
