KUALA LUMPUR (Mar 10): The KL International Airport (KLIA) in Sepang saw a 2.7% drop in passenger traffic in February this year from the year before, on lower international and domestic travellers.

The number of people passing through the country’s biggest airport declined to 3.76 million from 3.86 million in February 2014, Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd (MAHB) said in a filing with Bursa Malaysia today.

International passenger traffic fell 2.8% to 2.67 million and domestic travellers dropped 2.5% to 1.09 million.

“KLIA recorded 4 million passengers, a decline of 2.7% in February 2015 against a 16.5% growth in February 2014,” said MAHB in a statement.

KLIA Main Terminal passenger traffic fell 5.3% year-on-year to 1.87 million in February 2015, while the number of people passing through klia2/low-cost carrier terminal fell 0.02% year-on-year to 1.89 million.

MAHB said many domestic airports experienced negative passenger growth in February, excluding Penang, Kota Baru, Alor Setar, Kuala Terengganu, Subang, Melaka, Sibu, Kuantan, Limbang and Ipoh.

Due to weaker traffic recorded by KLIA, MAHB (fundamental: 1.15, valuation: 1.8) saw total passenger traffic dropped by 1% at the 39 airports that it manages to 6.46 million in February 2015 from 6.52 million a year ago.

International arrivals fell 4% to 3.08 million from 3.21 million in February 2014, although domestic passenger traffic was 2% higher at 3.38 million from 3.31 million a year ago.

MAHB shares closed down one sen or 0.15% to RM6.88, for a market capitalisation of RM9.5 billion.
