KUALA LUMPUR (May 11): The PAS Central Committee is expected to convene a meeting today to discuss the situation in Perak and Kedah, the two states still without a government following last Wednesday’s 14th general election.

PAS Information chief Nasrudin Hassan said the meeting would consider all views, opinions and possibilities before making any decision.

"The principle of ‘Amal Islami’embraced by PAS in decision-making process is by way of consultation (syura) and then finalised by the president. The pivot of PAS action is placing Islam above everything else,” he said in a statement here today.

Nasrudin said party president Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang, or deputy president Datuk Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man, would issue a statement after the meeting.

In Kedah, there are 36 state seats with PKR winning 18 seats, one seat short of the 19 seats needed for a simple majority, while  PAS won 15 seats and BN (three).

In Perak, where the simple majority required is 30 seats, Pakatan Harapan (PH), comprising PKR, DAP, PPBM and Amanah, won 29 seats of the 59 seats, while BN 27) and PAS (three).

The just-concluded general election also saw PH  ending the over 60 years of uninterrupted rule by BN in the country and some states.

Besides retaining Penang and Selangor, PH, also captured Johor, Melaka and Negeri Sembilan, while PAS retained Kelantan and captured Terengganu.  

PH chairman Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, who was prime minister for 22 years until 2003,  took the oath of office as the prime minister of Malaysia for the second time, and at the age of 92, last night.
