KOTA BARU: Kelantan PAS will go ahead with its plan to table the amendment to the Syariah Criminal Code II 1993 at the state legislative assembly today despite a survey showing that people preferred the state government to focus on post-flood reconstruction rather than hudud.

Kelantan Deputy Menteri Besar Datuk Mohd Amar Nik Abdullah said the post-flood recovery effort was not an issue because the state government has been involved in the reconstruction and rebuilding works since the floods subsided.

“It is not as if that once we table this enactment, we will forget about the flood-recovery works altogether. Everything can move simultaneously,” he said.

It was reported on Monday that pollster Merdeka Center, in its survey of 1,008 voters over the telephone, said 84% thought the state government should concentrate on repairing and rebuilding homes of flood victims.

This is also the prevalent view of 81% Malay/Muslim respondents interviewed across the peninsula.

Kelantan was hit by its worst floods in decades in December, with tens of thousands of people displaced, leaving the state to struggle with post-flood reconstruction. — The Malaysian Insider
