(Oct 20): The newly-formed opposition coalition Pakatan Harapan will abolish tolls at the North-South Expressway (NSE) if it comes into power, DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng said today.

In a press conference at the Parliament lobby today, he said the construction cost for the 600km highway, which connects several states in the peninsula had been “long recovered”.

“The only thing that will cost us is the maintenance. And that can be covered by the road tax,” the Penang chief minister said.

Lim was commenting on the recent toll hikes at several highways across the Klang Valley, Penang and Johor effective last Thursday.

However Lim said Pakatan Harapan would only abolish tolls for NSE and not for other roads.

"I stressed that it is only for the North-South Expressway."

Construction of NSE started in 1982 and was completed in 1994.

"For years, the concessionaires are reaping clean profits from the tolls." – The Malaysian Insider
