KUALA LUMPUR (Dec 10): The National Union of Flight Attendents Malaysia (Nufam) has called for a royal commission to be set up to investigate Penerbangan Malaysia Bhd's (PMB) losses amounting to a reported RM2 billion.

“There is a need to investigate this matter as it involves MAS (Malaysian Airline System Bhd). Could this be one of the reasons why MAS has suffered huge losses?” Nufam said in a statement today.

The union also called for a review of the Malaysian Airline System (MAS) Bhd (Administration) Bill 2014, which was passed in Parliament on Nov 27, stating that it violates the workers' and unions' basic rights to any disputes on the airline workers' employment contracts.

It claimed that the proposed Act was “hastily done” and that the unions were not consulted.

Nufam added that the proposed Act places a "tall barricade" to aviation unions to stop them from mitigating airline workers’ issues.

“We cannot allow the act to be enforce since it has set serious limitations to workers rights in raising disputes against the new airline company,” it added.

Nufam also urged Khazanah Nasional Bhd to consider offering volunteer separation schemes or apply the Last-In-First-Out (LIFO) scheme jobs cut.

"We want Khazanah to save these workers and not weed out the employees and throw them on the streets, while Khazanah provides no guarantee to their business plan," it said.

Nufam also questioned the remuneration to be offered to incoming MAS CEO Christoph Mueller.

The union said it is concern that the salary offered to Mueller can be "highly expensive" despite MAS’ weak financial position.
