KUALA LUMPUR (Oct 17): Given the increasing integration among countries in ASEAN, the government aims to facilitate local transport operators to export their services overseas.

The National Transport Plan 2019 (NTP 2019) emphasises on the internationalisation of transport service providers, which is seen as a key lever to take the country’s transport sector to the next level.

“Currently, there is high demand for door-to-door multimodal transport and integrated logistics services to cater to bigger volumes and delivery to larger markets.

“This creates a case for transport providers to merge, collaborate or coordinate their activities to achieve economies of scale and tap into the larger global trade,” the government said in the NTP 2019 blueprint.

The government has outlined three strategies to this end.

Firstly, it intends to create an environment that facilitates local transport industry operators to become regional or global players by promoting and supporting the expansion of transport service businesses abroad, as well as developing standards for industry players’ readiness on equipping hauliers for the international market.

“The large majority of local industry players have remained focused on the domestic market, with little- to no presence overseas. With increasing integration of the ASEAN region, there is significant potential for overseas expansion.

“In addition, global transport industries will place additional pressure on local operators to increase their competitiveness on a regional or global basis,” it said.

Besides that, the government will also look at facilitating regional cooperation and agreements that improve the transport industry by expediting the implementation of regional and international transport facilitation agreements and facilitating the implementation of the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC) blueprint and other international standards.

The government will also ensure that transport-related agencies are sufficiently equipped to drive the improvement of Malaysia’s ranking in global competitiveness indices by addressing fundamental issues related to the competitiveness indicators and by ensuring sufficient capacity and capabilities at transport-related agencies and institutions.
