KUALA LUMPUR (Dec 19): Car sales in the month of November rose 9% from a year ago, thanks to more year-end promotional campaigns.

In a statement today, the Malaysian Automotive Association (MAA) said 52,584 vehicles were sold in November, compared with 48,282 units a year ago. But on a month-to-month basis, overall sales of new vehicles fell 2.4% or 1,286 units from October's 51,298.

For December, MAA said sales volume should be similar to November's level, adding it expects there to be a continuation of aggressive year-end promotional campaigns, especially among players whose financial years end on Dec 31.

Segmentally, sales of new passenger vehicles rose 10% y-o-y in November to 47,754 units from 43,366 units, while sales of new commercial vehicles fell 2% y-o-y to 4,830 units from 4,916 units.

On a year-to-date (YTD) basis, total vehicle sales slipped a marginal 0.18% to 549,445 vehicles from 550,410 vehicles in the corresponding period last year. While YTD passenger vehicle sales rose 2% y-o-y to 500,861 units from 490,671 units, commercial vehicle sales fell 19% y-o-y to 48,584 units from 59,739 units.

Overall production, meanwhile, fell 8% y-o-y in November to 46,517 units from 50,304 units. YTD, vehicle total production dropped 1.1% y-o-y to 528,333 vehicles from 522,571 vehicles.
