(July 24): DAP no longer trusts that all opposition MPs in Parliament will vote against Datuk Seri Najib Razak if a vote of no-confidence against the prime minister is taken in the Dewan Rakyat.

The party's parliamentary leader Lim Kit Siang said this was because PAS president Datuk Abdul Hadi Awang was always coming to the prime minister's defence and shoring up support for Najib over scandals involving debt-ridden state fund 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB).

A year ago, Lim said, there would have been no doubt that all Pakatan Rakyat (PR) MPs from DAP, PKR and PAS would have voted in unison to demand full accountability and transparency regarding the RM42 billion 1MDB scandal.

But while it was Hadi's prerogative to support Najib, Lim said, the Islamist party leader had no right to "tell lies" about DAP in pursuit of his "new political objective to be a friend of the prime minister".

"Will Hadi and his stalwarts support any such vote of no-confidence against Najib in Parliament?

"This is unlikely considering Hadi’s extraordinary  defence of Najib," Lim said in a statement today.

The Gelang Patah MP also said that it was regrettable that Hadi continued to repeat Umno's claims that DAP wanted to be master over other opposition parties.

"Hadi can change his political stand and stripes to be the stoutest defender of Najib, but don’t do so at the expense of truth, justice and honesty by parroting Umno lies and falsehoods against DAP."

Lim said that it was not an exaggeration to say that Hadi was the "single cause of the death" of PR because the Islamist party leader had not only violated the PR common policy framework and the pact's operational principle to decide things based on consensus, he also wanted to be "master" of PR.

He said Hadi had exercised veto and overriding powers, not just against the central committee of his own party, but against the PR leadership council.

"Hadi’s concept of politics, including coalition politics, is completely incompatible with democracy, pluralism, human rights, cultural diversity, women’s rights and the idea of development and modernity," Lim said.

Earlier this month, Hadi said that four witnesses should be presented to support allegations made against Najib that nearly US$700 million was credited into his personal bank accounts.

“Our stand is an Islamic stand. If the sodomy case against (PKR de facto leader) Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim should have four witnesses, then it should be the same for Najib," he reportedly said, in reference to the report by The Wall Street Journal that RM2.6 billion from 1MDB was allegedly channelled into the prime minister’s personal accounts before the 2013 general election. – The Malaysian Insider
