(July 29): Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin has expressed hope that the new Attorney-General Tan Sri Mohamed Apandi Ali will continue the ongoing investigations into 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) so that Malaysians can get clear answers into the company's alleged financial improprieties.

The former deputy prime minister said it was important to give the matter proper closure.

"I hope the new A-G will continue with the huge responsibility so that people will get the answers on whether there were any wrongdoings to ensure all the perceptions regarding 1MDB can be explained and that there won't be any doubts.

"It is important to give closure to it, so whoever is the new A-G has a huge responsibility," he said at a packed news conference at his residence today.

Apandi, a former federal court judge, was named as the new A-G yesterday to replace Tan Sri Abdul Gani Patail who had a kidney ailment, said state news agency Bernama in quoting Chief Secretary to the Government Tan Sri Ali Hamsa.

The news of a new attorney-general comes amid an ongoing investigation into alleged scandals at 1MDB.

Gani had been one of four members of a high-level task force probing into allegations of financial wrongdoing, as well as claims that money flowed through 1MDB-linked entities before ending up in the personal accounts of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak.

The task force has frozen six accounts in relation to its investigation into The Wall Street Journal's expose.

Muhyiddin said Gani's removal was a government decision which he would not dispute whether it is fair or not.

He expressed hopes that the new A-G will be given the necessary support, including from other investigation agencies, to discharge his duties.

The A-G serves as the main legal adviser to the government, and the role is included in Article 145 of the Federal Constitution.

Gani has held the post since 2002 and was slated to retire in October. – The Malaysian Insider
