KUALA LUMPUR (June 28): The Ministry of Health (MoH) today reported 18 new Covid-19 cases, with no local transmission cases among Malaysian citizens, bringing total infections to 8,634 cases.

Of the 18 new infections, four were imported cases and 14 were local transmissions involving only non-citizens, said health director-general Datuk Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah in a statement today.

Among the local transmission cases, nine cases were reported from retesting in the Pedas cluster, followed by two cases in the Sepang immigration detention centre, two cases in Sabah, and another one case in Kuala Lumpur through screening of construction workers in Kuala Lumpur.

On the other hand, 10 more patients recovered today, bringing total recoveries to 8,318 cases or 96.3% of overall cases.

Therefore, the total number of active Covid-19 cases stood at 195 cases, remaining under the 200-case level since Friday.

No new deaths were recorded today, said Noor Hisham, so the death toll remained at 121 or 1.4% of overall cases.

Two patients were being treated in the intensive care unit (ICU), and none of them required breathing assistance.

As of yesterday, a total of 2,575 cases (4.3%) of Covid-19 had been detected out of 60,298 foreigners who had gone through screening.

Meanwhile, 282 cases were still awaiting their test results.

Commenting on the Pedas cluster, Noor Hisham assured the infected patients had already been quarantined prior to being tested positive.

"As of June 28, 2020 (today), a total of 957 had been screened and so far 326 cases (34.1%) had tested positive for Covid-19. Of these, 312 cases (95.7%) were non-Malaysians," he said of the Pedas cluster.

"Considering that Malaysia is entering the recovery phase, various standard operating procedures (SOPs) have been developed for every sector. Employers should play their part in ensuring that the SOPs are properly implemented and continue to cooperate with the MoH by taking steps to prevent the spread of Covid-19, especially among foreigners," Noor Hisham added.
