KUALA LUMPUR (May 4): Malaysia reported 3,120 new Covid-19 infections today, pushing the number of active cases in the country to 31,516.

This is the third straight day that active cases have stayed above the 30,000 mark, and they include 338 patients in intensive care units, and 181 on ventilator support, the Ministry of Health said.

The ministry announced 23 deaths today, the highest in two months and raising the Covid-19 death toll to 1,574. The highest daily deaths recorded so far was 25, on Feb 18.

Six deaths each were reported in Kelantan and Selangor, four in Sarawak, two in Johor, two in Sabah and one each in Kedah, Perak and Melaka. All the deceased were Malaysians and they were aged between 37 and 85 years.

Of today's new cases, 3,114 were local transmissions while six were imported, the ministry's director-general Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said in a statement.

Selangor topped the list again with the most Covid-19 infections with 675, followed by Sarawak (620) and Kuala Lumpur (408).

Today's cases raised Malaysia's cumulative confirmed infections to 420,632.

Dr Noor Hisham said 2,334 Covid-19 patients were discharged in the 24 hours as of noon today, raising total recoveries to 387,542, or 92.1% of total infections.

The ministry also reported 17 new Covid-19 clusters today, bringing the number of active clusters to 405.

Of the new clusters, seven are community infections and five are linked to workplaces. Another three are linked to education centres, while the remaining are the Education Ministry and religious clusters.

The seven community clusters are Bungey in Sarawak (12 infections), Batu 25 in Sarawak (98), Tangkis Selatan in Johor (11), Jalan Surian in Johor (eight), Batu 30 in Kelantan (58), Jerai Maju in Kedah (nine), and Layangan Labuan in Labuan (12).

The five workplace clusters are Taming Jaya in Selangor (43), Persiaran Medini Sentral in Johor (nine), Jalan Kweng Hitam in Kelantan (14), Jalan Yahya 2 in Kuala Lumpur (14), and Jalan Besar Sungai Jawi in Penang (29).

The remaining clusters are Dah Kilometer Tujuh in Kedah (13), Lubuk Katak in Perak (24), D'Kuala in Sabah (16), Jalan Ungku Abdul Aziz in Johor (22), and Taman Sri Lambak in Johor (13).

To date, 1,706 clusters have been reported in the country, of which 1,301 have been declared ended.
