(May 19): The Negri Sembilan government will study the rationale of absorbing the goods and services tax (GST) for the services provided by the local councils under the state government.

Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan said a detailed study need to be conducted for all the GST charges before a decision could be made.

“We have to see if by absorbing the GST charges it will give any impact or not.

“We want when we make the decision; it will benefit both parties as we don’t want to do it in a hurry when other state absorbs the GST,” he said.

So far Penang, Johor and Terengganu have announced that they were absorbing the GST charges incurred for local council services.

Mohamad said among others, a decision wpuld have to be made on services like housing rental under the Poor People's Housing Project (PPRT) which incurred the GST.

“However, for the value added services like shop-house and building rental, I think GST should not be exempted.

“The decision that we are going to make must benefit both parties through a win-win situation,” he said. – The Malaysian Insider
