(July 29): The prime minister's brother Datuk Seri Nazir Razak warned that Malaysia could end up like "a game of thrones" if its institutions were not protected.

He also posted a picture of a poster depicting popular HBO series "Game of Thrones", a medieval fantasy of powerful families vying for political power.

"Through this political turmoil, we must preserve and protect the integrity of our institutions or we descend into a game of thrones," the CIMB group chairman wrote along with the picture.

Nazir did not elaborate, but his post comes a day after the Cabinet reshuffle by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak, and the removal of Tan Sri Abdul Gani Patail as Attorney-General (A-G).

Gani was part of a government task force probing claims by The Wall Street Journal of nearly US$700 million (RM2.67 billion) being channeled into Najib's personal accounts.

The prime minister also elevated four members of Parliament's Public Accounts Committee, including its chairman Datuk Nur Jazlan Mohamed into the government administrative line up.

Jazlan is the new deputy home minister. He said after his appointment yesterday that the PAC would have to halt its probe into 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB) unit new committee members are appointed, as Parliament's rules did not allow a member of the administration to sit on the PAC.

The three other PAC members, namely Datuk Seri Reezal Merican Naina Merican and Datuk Mas Ermieyati Samsudin were made deputy ministers while Datuk Wilfred Madius Tangau is now a minister.

PAC was of holding an inquiry into debt-ridden state 1MDB over its RM42 billion debts and was scheduled to hear from the state investment firm's top executives.

The Cabinet reshuffle and Gani's removal as A-G have been criticised by the opposition and civil society for disrupting probes into 1MDB, with critics saying it showed that Najib was attempting to hide the truth. – The Malaysian Insider
