KUALA LUMPUR: The government has tabled the first reading of the National Anti-Financial Crime Centre Bill 2019.

The bill is part of the National Anti-Corruption Plan 2019-2023, Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Law) Datuk Liew Vui Keong said yesterday.

“The centre seeks to coordinate the efforts of 12 existing enforcement agencies, among others the Royal Malaysian Police, Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission, the Royal Malaysian Customs Department and Bank Negara Malaysia in preventing and combating financial crimes, both domestically and internationally,” he said.

The Anti-Financial Crime Centre will not have investigative powers of its own, serving as an integrated agency that will coordinate action among all of the law enforcement agencies. It will also address financial crimes such as money laundering.

Liew noted that the authorities are dealing with financial crimes, which are under control, adding that the centre will help the government address the issue.

He said Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad will recommend to the Yang di-Pertuan Agong a candidate to head the centre.
