KUALA LUMPUR (Sept 3): Datuk Mohamad Nizar Najib, the son of former premier Datuk Seri Najib Razak, has entered into a settlement with the Special Commissioners of Income Tax (SCIT) over his non-payment of RM13.16 million in tax arrears.

Nizar’s lawyer Muhammad Farhan Muhammad Shafee told theedgemarkets today that a consent order was recorded on Aug 26.

He said the amount Nizar agreed to pay under the consent judgment is “significantly less” than the RM13.16 million claimed by the Inland Revenue Board (IRB).

The lawyer, however, declined to state the exact amount, insisting that it cannot be made public under the settlement.

Following the consent order, Muhammad Farhan said his client will be withdrawing the appeal filed at the Court of Appeal against the High Court decision to grant summary judgment in favour of the IRB over the RM13.6 million unpaid taxes.

Nizar, who is Pekan Umno Youth division chief, had filed the appeal on Aug 11 last year, four days after the High Court’s decision.

A summary judgment is a judgment that is entered by court based on written submissions alone, minus a full trial and witness testimonies, upon being satisfied that there are no triable issues to be decided.

The Court of Appeal had fixed Sept 9 for the parties to update on the status of the appeal.
