Media statement by DAP Member of Parliament (MP) for Iskandar Puteri Lim Kit Siang in Penang on Monday (Sept 5):

Dewan Rakyat Speaker Tan Sri Azhar Azizan Harun has announced that former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak has filed a pardon petition [for his conviction in the SRC International Sdn Bhd case], and will continue to be the MP for Pekan until Parliament is dissolved.

Najib’s pardon petition is the first of its kind, different from all pardon petitions of the past 65 years.

Firstly, all previous pardon petitions contained elements of regret, remorse or contrition for the offence committed, or were filed after the convict served a considerable portion of the sentence.

This is the first time in the nation’s history where a pardon petition is submitted immediately after conviction, and carries the implication that the judiciary was wrong to put Najib in jail, an implication that the five judges in the Federal Court had failed the cause of justice in not allowing a postponement of the hearing.

Do we want to involve the Yang di-Pertuan Agong in such a controversy, which was generated by Najib and the Umno leadership to save Najib from political oblivion in disregard of the 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB) scandal, which had earned for Malaysia the infamy of a kleptocracy?

Has Najib expressed any regret, remorse or contrition for the 1MDB scandal, and for other acts of corruption, when he was the prime minister of Malaysia?

Najib has four other corruption trials. Is he going to be pardoned every time he is convicted?

Najib’s son Datuk Mohd Nizar has said that Najib will rise above all challenges as [Nelson] Mandela did.

Is there some understanding that Najib will be pardoned?

Had Mandela ever been charged in South Africa with not just corruption, but a “kleptocracy at its worst” financial scandal?

Can “Malu Apa Bossku” supporters enlighten on the matter?
