KUALA LUMPUR (May 12): Former premier Datuk Seri Najib Razak's defence team has applied for the May 18 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB) trial date to be vacated, to allow him as the Pekan Member of Parliament to attend the Parliament sitting.

It is understood that High Court judge Collin Lawrence Sequerah has allowed the matter to be vacated on May 18, and it would begin at 2pm on Tuesday (May 19).

The High Court has allowed the case involving Najib to begin in the afternoon as 1MDB lead prosecutor and former Federal Court judge Datuk Seri Gopal Sri Ram has a case at the Court of Appeal in the morning.

This was confirmed to theedgemarkets.com by Deputy Public Prosecutor Ahmad Akram Gharib.

“Yes Najib's defence has written in to apply for the May 18 date to be vacated, and the court has allowed it and now fixed May 19 at 2pm for the case to resume,” Ahmad Akram confirmed.

Initially, the former premier's 1MDB trial was supposed to resume tomorrow, but it had been postponed to May 18 and now to May 19.

The Parliament sitting on May 18 is the first sitting this year which will see the royal address by the Yang di-Pertuan Agong Sultan Abdullah Ri'ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah.

This would also be the first sitting of the Perikatan Nasional government led by Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin, which replaces the Pakatan Harapan government that fell in late February.

It was also reported that Dewan Rakyat Speaker Tan Sri Mohamad Ariff Md Yusof has allowed a motion by former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad for a motion of no confidence against Muhyiddin to be tabled.
