Najib: Umno has a capable team for the transformation agenda

PUTRAJAYA: The newly-elected team of Umno vice-presidents is capable of implementing the ruling government’s transformation agenda even though it was the incumbents who won last Saturday.

This was stressed by both Umno president Datuk Seri Najib Razak and his deputy Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin during a press conference at the IOI Golf Resort here yesterday.

However, looking at the overall results of the Umno 2013 party elections, they said there are noticeably new faces, especially at the division level.

“Overall, Umno has shown maturity in carrying out its responsibility.

“Umno members must now accept the leaders who were elected as being capable in fulfilling their duties and responsibilities as leaders,” Najib said.

Commenting on whether the line-up will reflect that of the 14th general election, Najib said those chosen must be respected as it is the choice of about 150,000 Umno members.

“Some 150,000 people have chosen the line-up but we will strengthen it in the sense that I have the option to appoint additional members to the Supreme Council,” he said.

He said the numbers to be appointed will be based on the provisions of the party constitution.

Najib said transformation does not mean that incumbents must be changed to allow new faces, instead, it is the capability of the team to carry out the transformation agenda.

“Give a chance to this team to prove their worth in implementing transformation for the country,” he said, responding to comments that the line-up does not reflect that Umno wants change.

On the lack of representatives from certain states like Selangor for example, Najib said it was the result of the votes given by the delegates.

Umno delegates nationwide voted for the candidates of their choice not based on state, he added.

“We cannot have a result that can satisfy all quarters. That’s why the constitution empowers the party president to appoint additional members.“I will discuss this with the deputy president later so that we get to look at where we can strengthen the party by appointing additional members,” said Najib. For more stories, go to, the website for freedom of expression and fairness in articulation. This article first appeared in The Edge Financial Daily, on October 21, 2013.
