(June 5): Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak has "embarrassed" not only himself, but also the cabinet and the government by not showing up at a dialogue session on 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) today, a former minister said.

Writing in his blog today, former information minister Tan Sri Zainuddin Maidin said the cabinet must now think of ways to redeem the dignity of the country's leadership.

Najib was supposed to attend the dialogue session with NGOs organised by SukaGuam, but backed out after Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar cited security concerns and cancelled the event.

Najib's chief critic, former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, showed up but was stopped 10 minutes into his speech by police officers.

"Never in history did we have a prime minister being embarrassed in such a manner," said Zainuddin in his blog.

He said that Najib's failure to show up at the event despite giving an undertaking to attend would drop confidence levels of his leadership to an all-time low.

"His sincerity will now be questioned by all," he said.

Zainuddin said any cabinet member with "integrity" would feel demoralised for being led by a leader who had lost the people's trust.

He said the excuse behind the cancellation was an attempt to fool the people and noted that the reaction on social media indicated that the people were not buying the excuses. – The Malaysian Insider
