ALOR SETAR (May 11): Datuk Seri Mukhriz Mahathir was appointed for the second time as the Menteri Besar of Kedah today.

Mukhriz, who previously resigned from the post in February 2016, was sworn in before Kedah ruler Sultan Sallehuddin Sultan Badlishah at 4.15pm.

This put to rest speculations that he would be taking up a position in the federal cabinet.

The alternative would have been Kubang Pasu parliamentarian and Anak Bukit assemblyman Datuk Amiruddin Hamzah, who is now expected to be given the deputy menteri besar post.

Mukhriz, 54, the third son of Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, won both his Jerlun Parliament and Jitra state seats by a majority of 5,886 votes and 10,849 votes, respectively.

The Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia deputy president resigned as menteri besar and left Umno in 2016 following a disagreement over 1Malaysia Development Bhd with former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak.
