PUTRAJAYA: The Umno political bureau held a meeting at the Perdana Putra building here yesterday, chaired by Umno president Datuk Seri Najib Razak.

The meeting was also attended by Umno deputy president Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin and Umno vice-president Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal, who were dropped from the Cabinet in a reshuffle on July 28.

According to Bernama, the attendance of Muhyiddin and Mohd Shafie in the meeting was confirmed by their aides.

Wanita Umno chief Datuk Seri Shahrizat Abdul Jalil and Umno Youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin also attended the meeting.

A source said invitations to the meeting were sent last Wednesday, and the letters were signed by Umno secretary-general Datuk Seri Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor.

The meeting began at 9.30am and went on for about an hour. The cars carrying Muhyiddin and Mohd Shafie were seen leaving the building at 10.45am.

Khairy, who is youth and sports minister, said in a Twitter post that the meeting proceeded in a positive atmosphere.

“Good Umno political bureau meeting chaired by@NajibRazak. All senior office bearers in attendance. Positive mood,” he said in the post.

Earlier, The Malaysian Insider reported that Najib had summoned the political bureau to a meeting yesterday morning, two days ahead of the long-delayed supreme council meeting tomorrow.

Yesterday’s meeting, held at the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) in Putrajaya, came amid rumours that the supreme council would sack Muhyiddin, Mohd Shafie and five others from Umno tomorrow.

Neither Muhyiddin nor Mohd Shafie were invited to an earlier meeting on Sept 1, which was also held at the PMO.

Only a few supreme council members close to Najib attended the Sept 1 meeting, said the source. — Bernama/The Malaysian Insider
