KUALA LUMPUR (April 27): The appointment of Datuk Muhammad Ibrahim, the current deputy governor, as the new governor of the central bank has proven that Malaysians cannot believe anything the Wall Street Journal (WSJ) writes, said the Prime Minister Office (PMO).

In a statement today, the prime minister's press secretary Datuk Seri Tengku Sariffuffin claimed WSJ's "lies and total disregard for the facts in its reporting on Malaysia have been proven again".

"The WSJ reported as fact multiple times, including by Ken Brown on April 20 and Tom Wright on March 11, that the Prime Minister had appointed Tan Sri Irwan Serigar Abdullah to be the new governor of Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM) and that he was linked to 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB). This was despite no announcement having been made, and based on anonymous sources," he noted.

"The new governor has been named today — and it is Muhammad Ibrahim, the current deputy governor," he added.

"As today proved again, Malaysians can't believe anything they say," he added.

However, he claimed many believe WSJ's reports because they did not realise that WSJ "are allowing themselves as the willing vehicle of Tun Mahathir Mohamed's Anti Najib Campaign" for the sake of headlines, in another dig at the former prime minister.

The statement from PMO came after Muhammad's appointment as the new governor of the central bank, replacing long-time governor Tan Sri Dr Zeti Akhtar Aziz, who is retiring on April 30. His five-year term will start on May 1.
