KUALA LUMPUR (May 23): A lower average selling price of sugar and higher refining cost has kept MSM Malaysia Holdings Bhd in the red for the second consecutive quarter, as the group posted a net loss of RM7.06 million for its first quarter ended March 31, 2019 (1QFY19).

Comparatively, the refined sugar producer had posted a net profit of RM15.81 million in the previous year’s corresponding quarter (1QFY18), according to its stock exchange filing today.

Revenue in 1QFY19 was down 11.6% to RM485.62 million compared with RM549.06 million a year ago, due to lower average selling price, MSM said.

“The group shall continue to pursue strategic initiatives in 2019 to improve profitability and ensure sustainable business, amidst challenging external factors,” it said.

In its fourth quarter ended Dec 31, 2018 (4QFY18), MSM posted a net loss of RM10.39 million due to lower average selling price and higher finance cost.

Shares of MSM were down 1 sen to RM1.42 as at 2.43pm. The group had a market capitalisation of RM998.23 million.
