PUTRAJAYA (Jan 17): Works for the Mass Rapid Transit Sungai Buloh-Serdang-Putrajaya Line, also known as MRT2, is 70% complete, according to Finance Minister Lim Guan Eng.

"Major works are expected to be completed in 2022 and MRT2 will become fully operational by 2023," he said at the signing of a supplementary agreement between Mass Rapid Transport Corp Sdn Bhd and MMC Gamuda KVMRT (PDP SSP) Sdn Bhd today.

Today's supplemental agreement is the conclusion of the rationalisation process launched by the government for the project.

This process has yielded savings of RM8.82 billion or 22.4% from the project's original cost.

"The savings will not be immediate, it is spread over 20 years, so in the next 20 years the government can focus other infrastructure projects," said Lim.

MMC Gamuda KVMRT, the construction partner for the project, is a joint venture between MMC Corp Bhd and Gamuda Bhd.

One of the cost rationalisation is the deferment and rationalisation of elevated works and underground structures, such as those in Bandar Malaysia.

When asked if there are plans for an MRT station at Bandar Malaysia, Lim said the shell for the station is present.

"We can factor it later, we have to see the progress of Bandar Malaysia. We have to factor in demand for the station," said Lim.
