KUALA LUMPUR (Oct 2): Datuk Nor Hisham Ahmad Dahlan has been appointed the new Kuala Lumpur mayor. His two-year tenure starts today, taking over the helm of Dewan Bandaraya Kuala Lumpur (DBKL) from his predecessor Tan Sri Mohd Amin Nordin Abd Aziz.

Prior to this appointment, Nor Hisham was the president of the Majlis Perbandaran Subang Jaya (MPSJ) on a contractual basis after compulsory retirement from the civil service in 2016.

The work handover ceremony today was witnessed by Federal Territories Minister Khalid Abdul Samad and his deputy, Shahruddin Mohd Salleh.

Khalid hoped that with the support of DBKL, Nor Hisham will be able to perform his duties well.

"As the saying goes, a new broom sweeps clean. The expectation from the rakyat will be high and he will have a challenge [to deliver his role]," said Khalid. He also thanked Amin Nordin for his service at DBKL for the past 40 years.

Born and raised in KL, Nor Hisham said he hopes to elevate the status of the city not only in terms of physical development but also on the city’s softscape.

"We want to work closely with NGOs, the minority, the poor and the disabled in the city. There are 1.68 million people living in the city and we want to create a spirit of belonging among us. It's time for us to listen and then start doing, not just talk but do. It is time to walk the talk," said Nor Hisham.

When asked about property development in KL, he said: “The most important thing is to follow the rules and procedures [when it comes to development]".

Nordin tendered his resignation as KL mayor in September. His term was due in July next year.
