KUALA LUMPUR: The Dewan Rakyat yesterday observed a minute’s silence in memory of the victims of the mass shooting at the two mosques in Christchurch, New Zealand, which resulted 50 casualties.

Dewan Rakyat Speaker Datuk Mohamad Ariff Md Yusof, when concluding the debate on the emergency motion on the tragedy, requested Muslim members of Parliament (MPs) to recite the ‘surah Al-Fatihah’ while non-Muslim members observed one minute of silence.

“We hereby present our stand to the New Zealand parliament and government through this motion. The terror attacks upon the Muslim community at the Al Noor and Linwood Mosques in Christchurch, New Zealand are a despicable crime,” he said.

Earlier in the morning, PKR president Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim (PH-Port Dickson) tabled an emergency motion in the Dewan Rakyat to debate on the tragedy.

Subsequent to the ministerial question-and-answer session in the Dewan Rakyat, Anwar condemned the terror attack .

Five MPs spoke during the tabling of the motion, all of whom condemned the terror attacks and urged the authorities to curb hatred and promote harmony among the various races.

Apart from Anwar, the other four MPs are Datuk Seri Reezal Merican Naina Merican (BN-Kepala Batas), Lim Kit Siang (PH-Iskandar Puteri), Datuk Dr Mohd Khairuddin Aman Razali (PAS-Kuala Nerus), and Datuk Seri Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar (GPS-Santubong).
